Bathroom Lighting
How to choose lighting for Bathrooms?
The first thing to take into consideration when designing lighting for the bathroom is the IP rating of the fixture you would like to use. The IP rating is the ultimate proof of electrical enclosures' ability to shield against foreign elements like dust, moisture, and liquids. In bathrooms, the IP rating is especially important for protection against moisture and water.
The bathroom is divided into 4 zones from 0-3, Zone 0 requires the most protection, and legislation dictates a minimum of IP67-rated fitting explained further below. Although Zones 1-3 might not be exposed to the same elements it is recommended you use an IP44-rated light fitting to protect against moisture and small jets of water.
- Zone O: is inside the bath or shower tray.
- Zone 1: is over the bath or shower tray up to 06m outside the perimeter.
- Zone 2: is also above the bath or shower tray up to 2.25m from the floor.
- Zone 3: has no special requirements but needs to take into consideration the likelihood of water jets when cleaning.
What kind of Lighting is best for Bathrooms?
As you tend to do things that require visual clarity in the bathroom, such as shaving, styling hair or brushing teeth, all require a decent light output. For task lighting a cool white (4000K) or daylight (6500K) is recommended for the colour temperature as the warmer colours might not provide the same visual clarity. Generally speaking a colour temperature range of 4000K to 6500K would be more than adequate in the bathroom.
Another factor to contemplate when choosing bathroom fittings is which way they hang, up or down. If your bathroom has darker colours, then an upward-hanging light is recommended as that fitting will throw a wider beam of light around the room.
For a lighter colour palette bathroom, you can use a downward hanging light fitting as that can focus the light where it’s needed, and the lighter walls or ceilings can act like a diffuser throwing light further into the room.
The good thing with LED lighting is that most bulbs are dimmable so when you want to create a relaxing atmosphere you don’t necessarily need to have the brightness needed for task lighting. Smart LED bulbs allow wireless control, and you change colour or dim the bulb with a voice command or using an app.

Bathroom Spotlights
These light fixtures can also be classified under bathroom ceiling lights, or even wall lights due to their versatility. We have them listed under spotlights as they can be used for accent lighting by focusing the light beam on a spot in your bathroom providing more flexibility than standard ceiling lights.
Our bathroom spotlight range includes fittings with one, two, three or even four spots which can have light directed to different parts of the bathroom where it’s needed. For example, the Firstlight Atlantic 4 Bar spotlight could have one spot directed over the basin, another over the bath and the other 2 evenly spreading light across the bathroom. They come in a variety of high-end finishes and the ability to choose which LED bulb you want to use with your fitting, giving you more autonomy on how your bathroom is illuminated.
Bathroom LED Strip Lighting
LED strip lighting (also known as LED tape) is very versatile and due to its flexibility can be used just about anywhere in the home. Our range of Bathroom LED strip lights is IP67 rated, meaning it can be submerged into a body of water 1m deep for up to half an hour. This is ideal for people looking to add an aesthetic point of difference in the shower for example and this can also be used around the bath as well.
Around the rest of the bathroom where it might not get as much exposure to water splashes, an IP44-rated LED strip can be used. IP44-rated LED tape is protected from moisture and low-velocity sprays of water, meaning you can use it as mood lighting along bathroom walls or ceilings. So long as the power source is kept away from exposure to water there is no limit to how you can use strip lighting in your bathroom.
Collingwood offers some superb products that are not only completely flexible, but you can also choose from different sides of the adhesive so that it doesn’t always have to be the back section which is how it adheres. A common problem is that consumers will want the LED strip to project to the side of where it is fixed, with the Collingwood option mentioned above this is possible.
The Integral Neon Flex LED strip range is very flexible and can be twisted to any shape and is also IP67 making it more than ideal for use in the bathroom. It is spotless even when dimmed and mimics traditional Neon effect lighting.
